Sunday 13 October 1940
Alf Turner dribbled the shabby, leather football over the cobbles of the back lane and muttered to himself as he ran. “It’s the great Clarrie Bourton racing into the penalty area for Coventry City … he beats one man … he beats three … he raises his right foot … he shoots … and he scores!”
Alf thumped the ball at the black-brick, back wall of Mrs. Sheldon’s yard. It hit a stone and skidded to the left. Instead of hitting the wall it hit the back door. “It’s eight-nil to Coventry City … a new club record!” He cheered … even though he had missed the ‘goal’ he had chalked on the wall.
To celebrate he banged the ball towards the wall again … and again he hit the green back door. Peeling paint flaked off and there was the sound of wood splintering.
Suddenly the door was torn open and Mrs Sheldon stood there, her faded flowery housecoat wrapped around her and a headscarf tied in her colourless hair. Her face wasn’t colourless. It was red with rage. “What have I told you about banging that blasted ball against my door? Eh? What have I told you?”
Alf picked up his ball and watched her. He put his weight onto his toes, ready to turn and run if she took a step towards him. He didn’t answer her so she went on, “I said I’d go down to your father’s shop, get one of his boning knifes and stick it in the blasted ball. Give that ball to me now!” she ranted.
Alf just shook his head slowly. “Clarrie Bourton wouldn’t give the ball to some mad woman,” he said . Mrs Sheldon stepped forward. Alf fled. He dodged between the washing that hung on lines across the back street – sheets slapped at him, blouses blew at him and long-legged knickers nudged at him.
As you probably know Clarrie Bourton was Coventry City’s top scorer in the years before World War II. He scored 50 goals one season! That is amazing, isn’t it? Being a star footballer with a name like Clarrie.
